Alejandra O’Leary is a pop-rock musician and songwriter raised on the timeless melodies of the Beatles, the sweet country sensitivity of Lucinda Williams, and the rock n' roll of the Rolling Stones, the Strokes, and Liz Phair.
Currently based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, she grew up listening obsessively to the songs of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr and 1960s American girl groups while leading high school bands in Portland, Maine. Alejandra is equally adept at headlining rock n' roll shows on large stages and performing stripped-down acoustic sets that showcase the simple beauty of her tunes.
Alejandra is the granddaughter of the Colombian writer Alvaro Cepeda Samudio and visits Latin America often. Alejandra graduated from high school in Santiago, Chile before attending Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. After graduating from Yale, Alejandra moved to New York City to pursue a career in music.
Her debut album, "Nothing Out Loud" was released in 2009 to national and international acclaim.
"Alejandra O’Leary’s debut is chock-full of uncomplicated pop songs that waver between ‘60s joie de vivre and a knowing Liz Phair vibe. My favorites: the wonderfully addictive 'Thinkin’ Straight' and 'Tremor'. 'It’s raw, mercifully straightforward songwriting, which grabs hold and doesn’t let go," wrote one reviewer for CDBaby.com.
Indie music blog The Ripple Effect declared the album "gorgeous...truly head and shoulders above the pack." U.K. music magazine Whisperin' and Hollerin' write that "Nothing Out Loud" "owes much to sixties Spector-esque pop while managing to stay removed from the blandness of the mainstream. The honesty and bold talking quality is impressive and helps make this a bold and confident debut." Pop culture magazine Feminist Review praised "O'Leary's mastery of the pop hook" that "pushes these tracks beyond the realm of the ordinary."
A new album of Alejandra's inimitable pop-rock songs, "Broken Mirror Baby", was released by the independent label Hollow Body Records on September 3, 2011. "Prepare for some more superlatives, because these new cuts are just as swathed in delicious pop melodies," wrote indie music blog Heavier-Than-Air in a preview of "Broken Mirror Baby".
Alejandra and her band have played at many prominent venues and festivals, including International Pop Overthrow Detroit, Ann Arbor Summer Festival, and the Cow Pie Music Festival. Alejandra is currently touring and headlining Ann Arbor-area shows with her band, as well as playing solo acoustic shows all over the U.S.A.
